Navigating Property Tax Exemptions for Disabled Veterans

Homeownership carries unavoidable costs, with property taxes often topping the list. However, disabled veterans have access to relief programs that can substantially reduce or erase this burden.

A new law in New York recently expanded full tax exemptions for qualifying service members. If you served, now is the time to review these benefits.

Decoding Property Tax Exemptions

Relief structures vary drastically by jurisdiction. Depending on your state, an exemption might lower the assessed value of your home, remove local municipal levies while leaving school taxes intact, or wipe out the bill completely. Two veterans with identical home values could face entirely different tax obligations based on their ZIP code.

New York's Legislative Update

Historically, New York municipalities had to opt into offering these benefits, creating a patchwork of rules. Under the new legislation, veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating will receive a full property tax exemption on their primary residence statewide.

This unified benefit officially takes effect October 1, 2026, applying to the subsequent assessment roll.

States Offering Full Exemptions

While every state provides some relief, only a select group offers a complete waiver for primary residences. As of 2026, veterans with a 100% service-connected disability can find full property tax exemptions in:

  • Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Hawaii
  • Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan
  • New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma
  • Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia
  • New York (effective 2026)

Eligibility and the Application Process

Securing these benefits requires proactive effort. Criteria typically include proof of military service, documentation of your service-connected disability rating from the VA, and confirmation that the home is your primary residence. Some states also extend breaks to surviving spouses.

Crucially, these savings are not automatic. You must submit an application through your local assessor's office and often provide renewals. Missing a deadline can delay your tax relief by an entire year.
