Essential Tax Deadlines: January 2026 for Businesses

The commencement of 2026 marks crucial tax deadlines that businesses, employers, farmers, and fishermen must note. Proactive planning can ensure you remain compliant and avoid penalties.

January 15 - Employer’s Monthly Deposit Deadline:

Employers required to follow the monthly deposit rules must submit their deposits for Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes for December 2025 by January 15. Additionally, the same deadline applies to nonpayroll withholding deposits for December 2025, under the monthly deposit framework. It’s important to note that employment tax deposits are mandated to be done electronically, except for those with a deposit liability under $2,500 for a return period, who may remit payments quarterly or annually with their returns.

January 15 - Farmers and Fishermen:
If you’re a farmer or a fisherman, remember to pay your estimated tax for 2025 using Form 1040-ES by January 15. While you have until April 15 to file your 2025 income tax return (Form 1040 or Form 1040-SR), not paying your estimated tax by January 15 means you must file your return and settle any taxes by March 2, 2026, to avert an estimated tax penalty.

Weekends & Holidays:

Should a due date coincide with a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day that isn’t a holiday.
